Legal Aid Fair
The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in partnership with Crenshaw United Methodist Church held its first FREE Legal Aid Fair for all residents of the South Los Angeles Community on Saturday, October 26, 2019. The event was co-chaired by Alois Phillips, Evynn Davis, and Winnie Young, Esquires. Most recently, it has been reported that “more than 80 percent of people living below the poverty line and a majority of middle-income Americans receive no meaningful assistance when facing important civil legal issues, such as child custody, debt collection, eviction, and foreclosure.” [1] As noted by Annette Mosley Gibson, 42rd Chapter President, Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter, “the need for cultural competent alternative forms of legal services are necessary to meet the affordability and access challenges impacting our communities.”
With this in mind, Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter has assembled a distinguished panel of legal scholars and speakers from the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Los Angeles Public Defender’s Office, Los Angeles County Child Support Services Division, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and Langston Bar Association. The panelists will discuss issues of interest to the community including “California Crime Reform and Prosecutorial Discretion,” “Know Your Rights,” “Expungements (Clients are requested to bring case number and information regarding conviction), “Child Support Enforcement,” “Child Support Orders,” “Estate Planning,” “Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney,” “Reverse Mortgages,” and “Restraining Orders.” “We hope the community does not miss this important legal event and encourage all to attend” - Alois Phillips, Evynn Davis, and Winnie Young.
Our next Legal Aid fair will be held Saturday, April 29 2023 from 10:00am - 2:00 pm at Crenshaw United Methodist Church. Please see the flyer below for more details.
