Nu Sigma

In 1927, graduates from the University of Southern California (USC) and The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), Upsilon, and Pi chapters respectively sought to continue the sorority’s move towards social activism and greater public service. To be successful on a scale that would benefit the Negro community far and wide; they knew that they had to form a closer association among college-educated women. They formed an organized group of local Deltas and petitioned the Grand Chapter to charter a graduate chapter in Los Angeles. As a result, Nu Sigma, the first graduate chapter on the West Coast, was established by Miriam Matthews on June 16, 1929.

In the early days, Nu Sigma was the only graduate chapter in the Los Angeles area. Consequently, the chapter was assigned to oversee the activity/service projects of the surrounding undergraduate chapters, which included Pi and Upsilon chapters as well as Epsilon Zeta (California State University Los Angeles), and Theta Psi (Retired). As the County of Los Angeles became more populated, more graduate chapters were added and undergraduate chapters were eventually reassigned. Today, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter sponsors the Upsilon (USC) undergraduate Chapter.

In 1935, the 13th National Convention was held in Los Angeles at the historic Second Baptist Church, during which time the sorority’s FIve-Point Programmatic Thrust was established. Nu Sigma Sorors, Dorothy Fawcett, Maurine Perkinson, and Eula Dean Roby were initiated during the convention.

In 1956, at the 24th National Convention held in Detroit, Michigan the Grand Chapter revised the nomenclature and graduate chapters thereafter were to be known as Alumnae chapters. From that point on Nu Sigma became the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter

Through the years four chapters have been birthed out of the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter: Century City, Inglewood, Los Angeles South Bay, and Cerritos Chapters. Our sister chapters in Pasadena, South Bay, and San Bernardino were founded by former leaders in the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter.
